The adaptation of overseas nurses in the UK by a period of supervised
practice has undergone significant change. The process by which overseas
nurses are prepared for the professional register is now prescribed
by the NMC. This has been prompted by inconsistencies that have existed
across the NHS and private sectors in respect of the NMC requirements
for supervised practice (NMC 2004 QA Factsheet).
In October 2005 the Nursing and Midwifery Council approved JSC
Training on behalf of Manchester Metropolitan University to
lead the overseas nursing programme (ONP). We have been undertaking
educational audits since 2001 and monitoring the quality of overseas
nurse adaptation programmes. We are now delighted to announce the
new ONP and can confirm that we no longer support the old supervised
practice system.
